Betta Fish Care

The Betta is undeniably one of the most preferred freshwater tropical fish for home aquariums. And why is that? The Betta is, first and primarily, brightly colored in shades of vibrant hues exceptional among freshwater fish. Second, this member of the Belontiidae family is sturdy when placed in suitable water parameters. Bettas have exceptional adaptation capabilities that let them to live and thrive in standstill pools, including the ability to breathe in atmospheric air in addition to breathing with their gills. You may see your betta take a gasp of air at the surface of his water on occasion.

Feeding
Bettas are carnivorous and can be given flake or pelleted food. Feed a small amount twice daily, or as directed by food packaging. Please look up to the food packaging for feeding instructions so you do not overfeed. Overfeeding can be harmful to the betta and ruin the water. Remove any uneaten food after the feeding period.

Cleaning
Water changes should be done on a weekly basis with a water conditioner to remove chloramines, chlorine and ammonia that is the same temperature as the water you are replacing. When cleaning the aquarium do not use household cleaners. Just use warm water and a clean brush or sponge.

Tank setup
Bettas love to have places to hide, particularly female bettas, so offering a few hiding locations in the fish tank will surely keep your fish happy. If you want to style the aquarium up with some plants, use only live plants or plants made specially for use with bettas since hard, plastic plants may harm the betta’s beautiful yet delicate fins. You can also include some aquarium gravel or sand to the bottom of the tank.

Do not position betta in direct sunlight or near heating devices, air conditioners or where quick temperature changes are likely.
